Ascension Day picnic at Camphill Community Glencraig

“Our Lord Jesus Christ ascended into heaven; let our hearts ascend with him.”

St. Augustine

On 9th May the community gathered together to celebrate Ascension day.

There was a lovely picnic, a story and games ending with some delicious hotdogs and Glencraig apple juice for everyone!

What is Ascension Day?

It is a Christian holiday that commemorates Jesus Christ's ascension into heaven and in many countries around the world it is officially celebrated on a Thursday on the 40th day of Easter (or 39 days after Easter Sunday).

According to the New Testament, Jesus Christ met several times with his disciples during the 40 days after His resurrection to instruct them on how to carry out His teachings. It is believed that on the 40th day he took them to the Mount of Olives, where they watched as He ascended to heaven.

For many Christians around the world Ascension Day is a public holiday and special services take place at local churches.  Popular customs included a procession in imitation of Christ's journey with his Apostles to the Mount of Olives, as well as the raising of a crucifix or a statue of the risen Christ through an opening in the church roof.

Ascension picnics

Ascension is an ancient feast and has been dated back to as early as 68 AD. In the Orthodox Church, it is one of the Great Feasts!

Throughout Europe during the Middle Ages, Ascension feasts featured birds: swan or peafowl if you were rich enough, or almost anything else that flew. The birds might be roasted or boiled or cooked in a pie. In Germany, pastries were made in the shape of birds!

Why birds? Because Christ “flew” to heaven, of course!

Anyone for some chicken or turkey?!

And many people had their feasts outside as picnics on hilltops, so our outdoor feast is in keeping with this old tradition.

Rain!

Many believed that when Christ ascended, the sky was blessed. This meant that all water that falls from the sky on the Ascension is blessed. In some countries, people used to collect rainwater that fell on the day, believing that it would heal the sick.

We had a great afternoon, enjoyed some tasty food, the weather was kind and it was a joy to spend this important day in celebration and happiness.
